Interning at Fabulous Magazine

So, a few months ago I finally got a reply after sending off numerous applications to companies within the journo industry. The said reply came from Fabulous Magazine, a magazine I have been reading ever since I can remember (cute story: my nanna saves it for me every Sunday whilst I'm away at uni, so I have them to keep and read as and when I want at home.)

I was invited to go and intern at Fabulous' offices in the News UK offices at Tower Hill for two weeks. So, on my first day, I went on my merry little way to Tower Hill, where I saw some quite beautiful London landmarks!

The docks where I ate my lunch!

Running errands over at London bridge (this is Tower bridge)

The Tower of London and The Shard on the walk to work

Once arriving at Thomas More Square, I was pretty darn nervous to say the least - knowing I was surrounded by tall glass buildings filled with journalists with years of experience absolutely terrified me. Though there was no need to worry, the Fabulous team were so lovely and welcoming.

I was based in the editorial team whilst there, so got to do all sorts of tasks (no day is ever the same in journalism) including:

  • Collecting ideas for future features or online - This happened every morning. I would collect a paper of my choice, or look at websites online and find news articles that we could find an angle on and turn into an online story or future feature. I would then attend a daily conference with the digital team, and we would share our ideas and decide whether they would fit with the site.
  • Research for features - One of my first tasks for the features team, was to research into statistics that could be included in the magazine. It sounds dull but it was actually pretty interesting learning new things!
  • Writing up content for online - I was extremely lucky to be given a lot of stories to write up for the online team, many which were published with my own byline (eek!)

  • Phone interviews - I was asked to help out in interviewing people who would be doing Fabulous' trek to Machu Picchu to raise money for breast cancer charity Coppafeel. As you can imagine, as a student journalist, I was shitting myself at the thought. However, after biting the bullet and picking up the phone, I ended up having a very moving conversation with a breast cancer survivor who had a great story to tell. Hopefully, my name will be credited in the piece which will be going in the magazine too, YAY!
  • Attending press events - In my first week, after only 4 days on the job, I was asked to attend Samantha Faiers' fragrance launch in Mayfair, London. I was pretty excited to say the least and I actually got to meet and have a chat with Sam, who turned out to be such a down-to-earth lovely lady. I also left the event with a goody bag with a full-sized bottle of Sam's new fragrance, La Bella - which smells divine!

  • Transcribing interviews - I'll be honest, this can be a lengthy task and the amount of times you have to rewind to try and catch what someone said is unbelievable. However, it's a job that all journalists past and present have had to do (unless you're a whiz at shorthand) and it actually ended up quite interesting listening to the interviews.
  • Wrote up a feature to be published in the magazine - Another thing I was lucky enough (and trusted) to do in my first week was to write up an "It happened to me" piece that is quite a popular feature in Fab mag. I had to identify the best, most moving quotes from the interview transcript and write up the piece (which is written in first person) to portray emotion. It was quite the task condensing a 3,500 word transcript into 600 words but I managed it!

I did a variety of other tasks during my work experience, including running errands in London bridge, calling press offices for statistics and tying together England flags to make a bunting for the office (which I'm sure have probably been taken down now!)

On the last day I made a banana and chocolate cake and lemon drizzle cake for the office (I didn't get chance to take a picture!) but they must have been impressed, as I was given a huge bag of beauty goodies as a thank you present (whether that's a thank you for my hard work or the cake, I will never know!)

Hopefully I'll get to see them all again soon, when Fabulous HQ moves to The Shard - fancy, eh? I couldn't have asked for a better "first time" losing my intern virginity and will be forever grateful to the girls and boys at Fabulous for giving me the best experience!
